Business Analytics Project on
Improving the Quality Of Life in Singapore

To keep this report short, I will only be including my individual parts & necessary information.

Summary of Business Objectives

The Singapore government develops the economy, adapts to technological advancements, formulates policies and schemes, addresses societal needs, and their overall objective is to improve society and promote the growth and progression of Singapore.

To accomplish the above objectives efficiently, the Singapore government is divided into sixteen

ministries, each focusing on a particular aspect of Singapore that requires continuous improvement and assessment. In this project, we will focus on five specific ministries. These ministries include the Ministry of Finance (MOF), the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI), the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Health (MOH), and the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF).

Problem Statement

How might we improve the quality of life of Singaporeans in order to ensure the continued progress of Singapore?

Project Goal

Our goal is for the government of Singapore which includes the various ministry of Singapore,

to be able to improve the standard of living for Singaporeans in the areas of Economy, Technology, Education, Health, and Society.

Hypothesis 1: Physical Abuse is the Leading cause of an increase in Family Violence

Hypothesis 2: The Covid-19 Lockdown led to an increase in domestic abuse within families in Singapore.

Describe the business scenarios, recommendation and insights discover

Ivan: The insights discovered from my two dashboards are that Covid-19 Lockdown led to an increase in Domestic abuse cases as it led to higher levels of stress which affected the Mental Well-being of Singaporean's, causing the Mental Health of Singaporeans to deteriorate, which badly affects many aspects of Singaporean's Lives, vice versa.

Thus, leading to a spike in Domestic Abuse cases in 2020. We also gained insight into how Physical Abuse is not only the leading type of Domestic abuse case, but it is growing at the fastest rate every year. Based on these Insights, I can recommend resolving the issue of Mental Health and Stress amongst Singaporeans, which would decrease the amount of Domestic Abuse cases as there is a growing relationship between them. Another recommendation would be resolving the rising issue of Physical Domestic Abuse cases, resolving this would lower total Domestic Abuse cases by more than 50%.

Describe the analytics model(s) used

The analytics models used were Descriptive Analytics, Diagnostic Analytics, and Prescriptive Analytics. Descriptive Analytics was used to describe the current Issue of Domestic Abuse and Covid-19's Effect on it, this gives us insight into what the situation is like. On the other hand, Diagnostic Analytics examines the visualisations to gather insights on why Domestic Abuse cases increased in Singapore and how Covid-19 aided in it. One example would be because Covid-19 had affected Singaporeans' mental well-being and multiple aspects of their lives, leading to an increase in Domestic Abuse. Lastly, Prescriptive Analytics enable us to have further insights into which Category of Domestic Abuse, which Aspect of Singaporeans Lives, and if Mental Health should be dealt with in order to prevent any further increase in Domestic Abuse. This Analytics use enables us to be able to support and provide insights into my hypothesis on how "Covid-19 has led to an increase in Domestic Abuse" and how "Physical Abuse is the leading cause of Domestic Abuse".

Dashboard 1:

Features:

- Clicking or Hovering will show Visualisation on Each Category of Child Abuse as shown below

- Groupings were created for Aspects of Life Singaporeans found challenging

- “Not Affected” Fields were created for Impact of Covid-19 on mental wellbeing worldwide

- Filters for Years and Countries was added

Dashboard 2:

Features:

- Filters for Years and Types of Child Abuse was added

Problems Encountered

Ivan:

  • One of the problems encountered were insufficient data, this is because I could not find any data relating to Singaporean's anger management or any factors that would contribute to Domestic Physical Abuse from websites such as Statistia and Data Gov.

  • Another problem encountered was creating the stacked bar chart and changing the colours of each category when drilling into them. But I managed to find a solution to all these problems through long hours of research.

  • Other than these two problems, I had no issues with the explanation and describing the correlation between visualisations and dashboards.

Future Enhancements

Ivan:

  • One enhancement I would make is by coming up with a Survey to gather more data on Domestic Physical Abuse and how it relates to Anger Managements in Singapore to see if Anger Managements are the root cause of the rising issue of Domestic Physical Abuse.

  • Another enhancement I would make is by creating more Visualisations based on the Survey Results or by outsourcing to look for such data through emailing Data Gov, etc.

Conclusion

By gathering data surrounding my hypothesis, I can come up with 10 Visualisations spread across 2 dashboards to analyse data. Using Descriptive Analysis, Diagnostic Analysis, and Prescriptive Analysis, we can look at the current situation of Domestic Abuse within Singapore over the past 10 years and how there is a growing trend. Looking further in-depth, we can also see that Physical Abuse is the lead cause of Domestic Abuse, proving the hypothesis on how Physical abuse is the lead cause of an increase in Domestic Abuse. With the Diagnostic and Prescriptive Analysis, we can see how Covid-19 disrupted so many aspects of people’s lives, leading to higher levels of stress, along with detrimental effects on mental health and mental well-being, which are the root cause of Domestic Abuse within families, which proves and explains my hypothesis on how Covid-19 Lockdown led to an increase in domestic abuse within families in Singapore. Another insight would be how Physical Abuse is not only the leading type of Domestic abuse case, but it is growing at the fastest rate every year. The outcome of this analysis fits the project expectation as we now have insight into the correlation between the cause of Domestic Abuse and Mental Well-being, along with finding the leading contributed type of Domestic Abuse, being Physical Abuse. These insights could provide us with a solution on How to Improve the Lives of Singaporeans, which is to solve the root cause of the issue by focusing on resolving the Mental Health challenges of Singaporeans. Another solution would be decreasing the amount of Physical Domestic abuse cases, which could lower more than 50% of total Domestic Abuse cases.
